Here are the job descriptions for volunteer positions currently available with the Bartell Theatre Foundation.  Don't forget that all six companies may contact you with other opportunities once you have registered on our website.


ONGOING:

House Manager:
The House Manager is responsible for setting up, overseeing, and spot-cleaning the public areas of the theatre, including the bar, concession stand, lobby, and restrooms.  The House Manager works with the Stage Manager to ensure the safety and comfort of the audience in the stage areas, including operating the lift, selling concessions, restocking the concessions area & soda cooler, and taking out trash & recycling. The House Manager is the go-to person for questions about the Bartell Theatre Foundation during performances and the eyes & ears in the lobby for the Stage Manager after performances begin. The House Manager will keep a report from the Box Office Manager of a count of all audience members. Generally, there will be a primary and a secondary house manager for each shift.
  • Goal:  A comfortable and welcoming experience for all patrons, great concessions sales.
  • Time commitment: Arrive 1.5 hrs before showtime.  One house manager must stay until all performances are ended and ushers are dismissed.
  • Requirements: Attend training session.  See calendar for House Volunteer Trainings
  • Benefits: One Bartell Ticket valid for 30 days, reservation required.
  • Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
  • Oversees:  Usher, Bartender

Usher
The Usher is responsible for creating a safe and welcoming space for patrons.  Ushers assist the House Manager in all duties as directed.  Ushers hand out programs and collect ticket stubs for the Box Office Manager. Ushers sell concessions before the show and/or during intermission. One usher must remain to assist the Stage Manager in case of emergency and clean up programs, wrappers, and cups from the audience area after the show, then assist the house manager until dismissed. Recommendation: One to two ushers per show per performance.
  • Goal:  A comfortable and welcoming experience for all patrons
  • Time commitment: Arrive 45 min before showtime.  One usher must stay until the audience area is cleaned after the show.
  • Requirements: Attend training session.  See calendar for House Volunteer Trainings
  • Receives: Ticket to the show for which you volunteer.
  • Reports to: House Manager
Bartender
The bartender is responsible for setting up the bar and lobby candles, serving before shows and at intermission, and restocking and cleaning up the bar. Bartenders must be licensed by the City of Madison or have a licensed bartender available to supervise them.

  • Goal:  A comfortable and welcoming experience for all patrons, great bar sales!
  • Time commitment: Bar must open 1 hr before earliest show time and close after last intermission. Arrive in time to set up, and leave after restocking and taking out trash & recycling.
  • Requirements: attend training session, hold City of Madison Operator's License
  • Receives: One Bartell Ticket valid for 30 days, reservation required. Also, keep your tips! May be as much as $50/night.
  • Reports to: House Manager
