The 2010 Bartell Theatre Awards, presented at the Bartell Theatre Saturday night, celebrate the work of the theater's resident companies. StageQ received 10 Barties, the most of any company. Next was Madison Theatre Guild, with eight nods. (

The first annual celebration of the six resident companies at the Bartell featured a red carpet entrance complete with paparazzi and adoring fans, plus champagne and hors d'oeuvres for all attendees. (

"I think in the long run we would much rather have this situation and have Overture survive and prosper with new governance, than having the alternative, which is Overture not succeeding," says Tom Carto, Overture president and CEO. "Then those people wouldn't have jobs at all." (

In an effort to celebrate the high school musical theater programs in southern Wisconsin, the Overture Center introduced The Tom Wopat Awards for Excellence in Musical Theater, or the Tommy Awards. The awards are named after local television and musical theater star Tom Wopat (“The Dukes of Hazzard”). Twenty-three high schools and one community theater participated in the program, looking for constructive feedback and possible praise. (

In Strollers Theatre Co.'s current production, Christy is a likeable wanderer, shyly coming into the public house covered in dirt and "destroyed" walking. His confession of murder earns him affection from Pegeen Mike (played well by Liz Angle) and admiration from her father, who quickly employs him. (

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz is working with Overture Center officials on a plan that would result in city ownership of the $205 million facility and a nonprofit to run it. (

When I heard the first Irish accent in The Playboy of the Western World, I almost groaned, because I haven't always had good experiences with tricky accents in local productions. I'm happy to report my fears were unfounded. The evening was full of fine accents and clever comedy. (

Me and Don Quixote: Strollers’ Man of La Mancha

I was aware that Man of La Mancha had a fight scene with muleteers but it isn’t known for that the same way that, say, Phantom is known for having a chandelier. Yet in this production, fight choreographer Rick Stemm created an impressive sequence that involved Sancho and Aldonza serving as Don Quixote’s proxies without him realizing it, seamless transitions to each subsequent set of combatants, and adroit use of a ladder.
The costumes, designed by Sydney Krieger and Hyewon Park, worked well with the “improvised” conceit of the play, and the appearance of Don Quixote’s wraithlike final adversary and his fellows was a dramatic visual. (
